My sister, Theresa, recently told me about the book she is reading ‘Born To Run’ (which I am super excited to start reading!). This book talks about the Mexican Tarahumara Indians “the running people”, a tribe of athletes that for thousands of years have been running 50 to 100 miles at a time…for fun. Yes you read that right, for FUN. Not only do the Tarahumara’s run these extreme distances, but it seems they do this without much effort, and without destroying their bodies.
Without giving too much away about the book, I do want to share one of the secrets of these super-athletes…. and it’s time to take out that ch-ch-ch-ch chia. Yup that right, chia seeds are a staple of the “world’s greatest distance runners”. More specifically, Iskiate, which is a citrus chia seed drink, that the Tarahumara Indians consume before running these extreme distances. This drink is known to give a magical burst of energy!
What Are Chia Seeds?
Chia seeds come from the plant Salvia hispanica, native to southern Mexico and Guatemala. They have been consumed by the Aztecs and Mayans since 2,600 BC. Today, these seeds are widely accessible, and can most likely be found at your local grocery store, or here. When mixed with water, chia seeds ‘gel’ up and absorb liquids which makes them easier to digest.
What Are The Benefits Of Chia Seeds?
Glad you asked! It is crazy how many benefits are in these tiny seeds! They are specifically known to give endurance energy and packed full of fiber, protein, omega-3’s, calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, Vitamin B1, B2, B3, and potassium. They also include many antioxidants, which fight the production of cancer and disease causing cells (free radicals). Here are some more benefits:

How To Eat Chia Seeds.

But today I am going to share with you the native drink of the Tarahumara tribe, Iskiate, or Chia Fresca. It is custom to drink before a workout, or when you need an energy boost during the day!
I have this drink at work and it really energizes and keeps me focused when I need it!
Iskiate (Chia Fresca) Recipe
2 tbs of chia seeds
1 8oz (or more) glass of water
citrus of your choice (lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange…)
Stir chia seeds into water, add a few squeezes of citrus. Let sit for 5 minutes, stir again, and then let soak for at least 3o minutes.
**Tip: Make it the night before work, refrigerate it, and quickly grab it on your way out the door the next morning. Try subbing it for your morning coffee!
