How To Go A Week Without Washing Your Hair

Dec 13

Guys I did my first Youtube video (posted below)!!  I definitely plan on doing more, but bear with me as my video editing skills are nooooot the best. So I totally winged this one with no editing, and just posted it from my phone.  I was really feeling it so WHY NOT.

I decided randomly to do this video because every time I post on snapchat/instagram that I have gone 7+ days without washing my hair I get 10000x questions on how the F I do it. Matt gets super embarrassed that I actually admit to this and I try to convince him it’s a thing, and super good for your hair.  MEN, IT’S A THING I SWEAR.

FYI The picture above is my hair after 7 days of not washing it. True story.

7 Reasons To Stop Washing Your Hair

  1. You hair stops producing excess scalp oil, called sebum, which leads to less “greasy” hair
  2. Less nasty chemicals going into your pores
  3. It gives your hair more body and looks fuller
  4. It’s easier to style your hair
  5. Saves you money.  Less shampoo and conditioner use = less money
  6. Your color stays longer
  7. Promotes strong and healthy hair

If those reasons aren’t enough to convince you I don’t know what is! I will say there is a learning curve for your hair. You have to train your hair by going 2 days at first, and working your way up over time. Don’t be afraid of rocking a high or low bun to work every once and a while to change things up.

Soooo check out my video below on HOW TO GO A WEEK WITHOUT WASHING YOUR HAIR 🙂 I have also provided all the links below to the products I talk about.

VIDEO RECAP

WASH YOUR HAIR | Wash your hair twice with a sulfate-free shampoo. (super important!!) The first time is to remove build up while the second time is to actually clean your scalp and hair.  Make sure you are scrubbing your entire scalp and roots while avoiding your ends as to not dry out your hair.  The shampoo will naturally run down onto your ends and that’s all you need!

CONDITION YOUR HAIR | Always condition your hair to restore moisture.  Once a week I suggest also using a heavier hair mask to lock in moisture and nutrients. When conditioning your hair only do so from the ears down.  You want to avoid your scalp so you are not clogging your pores and causing you hair to get ‘greesy’ faster.

USE A MICROFIBER HAIR TOWEL | Not only does it help reduce frizziness, but there is no need for rubbing with a microfiber towel causing less breakage, and is absorbs excess moisture faster than a regular towel.  So wrap your hair up in a microfiber towel as you are getting ready!

PROTECT YOUR HAIR | If you are styling your hair with hot tools, you MUST use heat protectant.  They help create a barrier between the hot tools and your hair, minimizing damage. Apply from the tops of the ears down, not on your scalp.

NOURISH YOUR HAIR | Don’t let your ends get frizzy and dry, nourish them with a nice oil or serum.  Only on the ends!

DRY SHAMPOO | This is the key, the holy grail of hair products. Dry shampoo your roots at night and in the morning when you hair starts getting oily.  Make sure you rub it in with your fingers and brush it through once you have sectioned off your hair and sprayed all of your roots. I use a blonde tinted one for my roots, it’s amazing!!

BRUSHING YOUR HAIR | Make sure you are using a good quality hair brush, it doesn’t have to be expensive! I use a wet brush for my damp hair and a bamboo brush for dry.  The wet brush is super gentle on wet hair and glide through any tangles with no snagging. The bamboo brush naturally conditions your hair by pulling oil down through your ends, does not produce any static, minimizes breakage, and feel ohh so good!

BUN IT | When you don’t need you hair down i.e. when you are sleeping, watching tv, at your desk, working out, in the shower… have it clipped in a bun.  At all times. This is literally the most important step besides dry shampooing. This is how you keep you hair clean in between washes. This will not only keep your hair clean because you aren’t touching it but it will also kee your face clean! I can’t swear by this enough. 99% of the time my hair is in this clip.  I keep them everywhere..by my bed, in my purse, in the car, in my gym bag, I even find then clipped onto my clothes sometimes HA! I keep an extra large stash in fear of forgetting one. I do a high bun when I’m sleeping, working out, in the shower, watching tv, and a low bun at work.

HAIRSPRAY | Never ever ever ever ever ever use it. Ew. Just don’t. It’s horrible for your hair.  Hairspray contains alcohol, which dries out your hair and makes it all nasty.  Unless you are getting a serious hair-do and the sylist needs to use A LITTLE BIT to hold. And when I mean a little bit I mean a few sprays, that’s all. Not holding the nozzle down and spraying all over. Personally, I don’t even own hairspray.

Oh, Kayleigh. I have tried this before. Long story short, I wasn’t washing my hair and decided to put a coconut oil/honey hair mask on my hair to condition it. Then I realized, I wasn’t going to be able to get it out, because I wasn’t using shampoo. I used eggs instead. Can you guess what happened??? I cooked the eggs in my hair in the shower. Yikes. That was the end of this no-poo process for me. But your post kinda makes me want to try it again! ( :

Oh my gosh Trisha!! That is pretty funny the eggs cooked though! A lot of those “Pinterest” ideas for conditioning your hair end up turning into fails 🙁 Trust me, I’ve been there too!! I’ve tried every remedy…this routine truly works! Let me know if you try it 🙂

Thanks so much for posting this! I’m new to the not washing thing and definitely don’t feel like I’ve gotten it down yet, so this was super super helpful! Thank you again!

I’m glad you enjoyed it! It definitely takes a little bit to “train” your hair – you’ll get there!
