How To Deal With Eating In The Airport

Jan 10

Let’s talk about food at the airport…YUCK!!!

I try and avoid airport food at all costs.  But let’s be real, when your flight gets delayed and your stuck at the airport for a million hours…you get pretty hungry!  So how do you deal?

Before I chat about my tips for eating at the airport, let me tell you this past year was SUPER crazy traveling wise.  I flew from San Diego to the east coast 9 times in the last 12 months, and flew within CA twice.  So I feel like I tackled eating at the airport head on.

Moving on…this is my routine pre airport, in the airport, while I’m flying, and post airport.  I’ll break it down for morning/afternoon flights, red eyes, and the dreaded flight delays.

Morning/Afternoon Flight

Pre airport:  First, I make sure I have a protein and fats filled breakfast/lunch to have sustainable energy and stay fuller for longer.  Before I leave for the airport I pack some raw nuts and an apple in these reusable bags.  I also typically grab a cold pressed juice that I finish before I arrive.  Lastly, I drink LOTS of water pre airport & flight.

Airport Arrival:  After I check in and everything is good with my flight, I go straight to find the biggest water bottle possible (which is usually a Figi or Smart Water).  Flights are already very dehydrating to your  body, and I feel like I never have enough access to water.  Plus the water fountains taste like pennies..eww.

In Flight:  Avoid ALL FOODS.  Seriously, they are all salty, dehydrate you more, and filled with gross ingredients/additives.  Now unless you are totally soaking in the fun of flying and want to have a few drinks, go for it!  Just keep in mind it will dehydrate you more!  So think twice before you order that champagne just for a cool instagram.

Post Flight:  Wait until you leave the airport to grab food, if you are STARVING, grab a quick Kind Bar, get your bags, and head out to get a bite to eat.

Red Eye Flight

Pre Airport:  I have a dinner filled with proteins & fats & drink lots of water.  I definitely want to avoid any carbs so I don’t get a spike in my sugar levels, and also because I will be super tempted to eat later on the flight, which is a MAJOR no no during red eyes.  You don’t want anything you can’t work off, so keep it simple, and light.

Airport Arrival: Again, I make a beeline for the largest possible water.  No joke it’s typically a 1 Liter or 1.5 Liter if I get lucky.  After I grab a water I head to a Starbucks or a coffee shop and get a camomile tea.  I want to get as much sleep as possible on the flight, and camomile is naturally calming and makes me pretty sleepy.

In Flight: NO FOOD!  Seriously… would you be eating at 2am…3am…4am normally?  I think not! (unless you work the night shift somewhere and your eating schedule is different) Don’t let a plane flight be an excuse.  You will seriously knock your body out of wack.  I just try my best to go to sleep, drink water, and order a hot cup of tea (normally because I am freezing my butt off curled up in this blanket).

Post Flight: Normally you are arriving super early in the morning, so don’t sprint to the nearest McDonald’s counter.  Try your best to stay on your normal eating time schedule.  Just wait until you leave the airport to grab a bite.

Okay so you did all of that..but now your flight is delayed and you are stuck at the airport and literally HAVE TO EAT.  Do your research, walk around, and don’t just grab the nearest fast food.  Most of the time Starbucks will have some good choices (not the pastres or cake pops!).  The picture above is of a Starbucks chick pea salad and a fruit cup.  Some good eats would be popcorn with no yucky additives, unsalted nuts, or if you really have time, grab a good salad at an airport restaurant.  Take out those snacks in your purse you packed!  But most of all, be smart, and read the ingredients! Keeps the breads, salty meats, and candy to a minimum, and focus on meals that will fill you up.

What are your favorite airport routines?
