First Time Fasting: How & Why We Did a 3 Day Fast

YUP so Matt and I did a fast! We did a real deal, no food, 3 day fast.

Some may think we’re crazy, hec we think we are a little crazy. But just wait until you hear all of the incredible benefits before making any judgements.  After reading Dr. Dom D’Agostino’s section in Tim Ferriss’s new book, “Tools of Titans: The Tactics, Routines, and Habits of Billionaires, Icons, and World Class Performers“, we were totally inspired to fast for 3 days!

This blog post covers why we fasted, the benefits, our progression over the 3 days, and the after effects.

What Type Of Fast Did We Do?

We did what some call a therapeutic fast, which means we obtained from all food (except specific erogenous fats which I will explain below).  Also, neither of us have cancer or any chronic diseases that we were fasting to prepare for a treatment.  We did a 3 day fast for all of the therapeutic benefits and to enter ketosis.

Wait what’s Ketosis?

Ketosis is a state you get into by following the ketogenic diet, often called “keto”.  It is a high fat diet that mimics fasting physiology.  Your brain and body begin to use ketones (derived from stored or ingested fat) for energy instead of blood sugar (glucose). You can achieve ketosis through fasting, diet, exogenous ketones, or a combination. (source)

Why Fast And What Are The Benefits?

  • Anti cancer benefits – by doing a 3 day fast (1-3 times a year) you can purge any precancerous cells that may be living in your body
  • Prevents Alzheimer’s – Alzheimer’s is the degeneration of the nerve system in the brain.  Ketosis and your body using fat for energy is vital for your brain and the natural treatment of dementia.
  • Reboot your immune system via stem cell-based regeneration
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves blood sugar levels
  • Promotes fat loss and body recomposition
  • Increases strength and performance
  • Eradicates symptoms of Lyme disease
  • Known to decrease depression
  • Dramatic improvements for autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis
  • A natural treatment for high blood pressure and Type II diabetes
  • Known to provide relief for asthma attacks and migraine headaches

Fasting Basics

We followed the instructions for fasting outlined by Dr. Dominic “Dom” D’Agostino, associate professor in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, and a senior research scientist at the Institute for Human Machine Cognition.  Dr. Dom is an expert in metabolic diets including ketogenic diets.  He is also known for his work in metabolic therapies and nutritional strategies for peak performance.

What Was Allowed During The 3 Day Fast

  • water (with a little fresh squeezed lemon)
  • coffee
  • tea
  • exogenous ketones in coffee/tea such as MCT oil, coconut oil, ghee butter. grass-fed butter

The 3 Day Fast Outline We Followed

  • Have a low carb dinner the night before you begin
  • Your first day on the fast, prepare to go on a 3-4 hour brisk walk (we did 3 hours).  Stay productive and distracted during the walk – i.e. listen to podcasts or an audio-book, call friends/family, set up work calls
  • During the walk, make sure you drinks TONS of water. Bring a liter water bottle with you, add some fresh squeezed lemon, and a few pinches of salt to prevent headaches or cramping.  After you finish drinking the water, fill it up again and keep drinking
  • Each day of fasting consume exogenous ketones when you wake up and through out the day in your tea or coffee (but no more than 4 tablespoons)
  • Drink TONS of water – this is key throughout the entire fast
  • Sleep in as much as you can if doing it on a weekend!  Let your sleep do the work for you.
  • When you break your fast, it doesn’t matter much what you eat (when doing a 3 day fast). So feel free to have whatever you want! Just be careful you don’t overwhelm your body with to much food. East slowly and consciously.

** If you want to continue a ketogenitc diet to stay in keto, eat LOTS of (good) fats, low carbs, and moderate proteins post fasting.

Day 1 of 3 Fasting

Day 1 was definitely the easiest.  Have you ever had one of those super busy days where you just forget to eat?  That’s what day 1 was like.  It is SUPER important to stay busy so there is rarely any downtime.  Instead of doing a Friday-Sunday fast we did Thursday (starting at 12pm) to Sunday (ending at 12pm).  We both agreed this was a lot easier because it includes 2 half days rather than all full days.  This is definitely preference, but worked out really well.

 

Day 2 of 3 Fasting

Honestly, day 2 was not AS hard as I though.  This does not mean it wasn’t difficult or had its struggles, but I definitely had more energy than expected in the beginning of the day.  Energy levels felt like a total roller coaster, but I didn’t “feel” hungry.  Sometimes I would feel refreshed and energetic, and other times I just wanted to lay on the couch and not move. By the end of the second day I would compare it to pulling an all-nighter in college, ever done it?  By the end you feel deprived and lacking concentration.  That’s pretty much how I felt in the middle and end of day 3.

Day 3 of 3 Fasting

Alright this was a little difficult.  The weird part was, I wasn’t even hungry. I just felt so deprived of energy, focus, concentration, patience. My body just didn’t want to move.  We went to an SDSU basketball game in the beginning of our day 3 (Saturday night) and our friend Curt told us it was actually difficult to hold a conversation with us.  He had to push to get a conversation going. One of the big things I noticed is that my typical peppy/smiling attitude was gone.  It took effort to laugh even if I thought something was funny.  The thoughts of hungar were REAL!  All Matt and I talked about was what we wanted for our first meal.  Actually…we talked a lot about food during this day.

The Aftermath

Post cleanse I felt GREAT! I felt so light, energetic, and digested food like a champ.  I had zero bloating. Seriously, I felt incredible. The struggles during the fast were SO worth the feeling after.  It also gives you a feeling similar to an adrenaline high or “post run high”.  This is definitely going to be a yearly thing for me.  I’m thinking every January to press the restart button on my body.  Who’s with me January 2018?

    I think my hubby and I are going to try this over the weekend. If all goes well we plan to do it 1 x per quarter or 2 x per year. I feel like a reset button is always a good idea!
