Acne Prone? You Need This Makeup In Your Life…Now

Feb 23

Ok. So I have a major problem with brands calling themselves “acne safe”,”skin clearing”, “acne fighting”, “won’t clog pores”, “noncomedogenic”, etc but having so many pore clogging and acne triggering ingredients.  Coconut oil in foundation/lotion? NO just NO. I wrote more about that in this post.   FYI I used to be that girl who believed coconut oil was amazing for my face just because I saw it on Pinterest.  So don’t feel bad if you didn’t know! Coconut is amazing to put IN your body, just not on your face.

So Why Can Skin Care Companies Make These “Acne Safe” Claims?

No government agency oversees this so skincare companies can claim their products promote clean skin and still have many ingredients that clog pores and cause breakouts. Basically, they can say whatever they want, it’s marketing, that’s all.  It’s so easy to get tricked into buying a foundation that claims they fight acne but actually does the opposite!  There are many dangerous chemicals in makeup but natural oils can actually be some of the worst such as cocoa butter and coconut oil which can be found in many “organic” skin care lines.  Even prescription products like the cream found in Retin A have pore cloggers.

Remember when I had SEVERE cystic acne as a result of reactions to food and stress? I tried anything and everything when it came to skincare and makeup to help heal and cover up my face.  Many things that claimed to be “acne fighting” and “skin clearing” actually made my skin SO MUCH WORSE.  Honestly it upsets me so much that marketing can trick people into buying terrible makeup for their skin.  So to show you I have picked out a few brands that claim they are “fighting acne” when reality they could be making things worse.

Neutrogena Skinclearing Liquid Makeup

What They Claim – “Neutrogena SkinClearing® oil-free makeup is the first and only liquid foundation formulated with MicroClear® technology to not only treat blemishes, but to also help prevent emerging breakouts. MicroClear® technology boosts the power of salicylic acid by breaking through oil and unclogging pores for fast acne relief.” Source

Why It’s NOT Acne Safe – Among others it contains Silica, PEG 8 Propylene Glycol Cocoate, and synthetic wax which are all pore clogging ingredients.  So though it has salicylic acid, it does not make up for the other acne triggering ingredients it contains. The worst ingredient in Neutrogena’s “skin clearing” makeup is the PEG 8.  PEG’s (polyethylene glycol) are petroleum-based compounds used as product thickeners and softeners.  They may be contaminated with measureable amounts of a chemical called ethylene oxide that can harm the nervous system.

Clinique Anti Blemish Solutions Makeup

First of all, I had to hunt to find these ingredients. They are not easily found on the website or product page.  That already tells me there is a problem.

What They Claim – “Feels so fresh, looks so natural. Non-irritating, oil-free makeup helps blend away blemishes, neutralize redness. Medicated ingredients help treat existing breakouts and keep them from coming back.” Source

Why It’s NOT Acne Safe –  It contains Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Isononyl Isononanoate, Polyglyceryl-6 Polyricinoleate, and Sodium Myristoyl Sarcosinate which are acne triggers, irritants, and pore clogging ingredients.

E.L.F. Acne Fighting Foundation

What They Claim – “This lightweight acne fighting foundation works to disguise redness, blemishes and uneven skintone. The flawless coverage foundation formula is infused with acne fighting key ingredients Salicylic Acid, Witch Hazel, Camphor, Tea Tree and soothing Aloe, to help prevent and treat acne blemishes.” Source

Why It’s NOT Acne Safe – Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Propylene Glycol, are all things you do not want to be putting on your face due to the pore clogging and harmful effects.

Highlighted Ingredient Benefits

Zinc Oxide Zinc is also known for it’s non-irritating effects on the skin.

Silica Spheres:  Silica is the most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust and most commonly found in nature as sand or quartz.  It has amazing oil-control properties.

Rice Powder:  Rice powder has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to make soothing skin poultices and is a wonderful botanical substitute in place of using talc or cornstarch.  It makes the skin feel cool and soft, has slow oil-absorbing properties, good moisture control and is non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic.

Silk Powder:  Silk powder is produced from from high quality silk and is made up of 100% fibroin.  It has long been a product used by Asian women to beautify their complexions.  Silk Powder contains 18 kinds of amino acids which are readily absorbed into the skin. Silk powder is appropriate for both dry and oily skin types because it has a natural moisture-adjusting quality which can absorb or release moisture as the temperature and humidity levels change.

Pearl Powder: An ancient beauty secret in Asia for 100’s of years, pearl powder is made from freshwater pearls.  It contains 20 amino acids along with approximately 31% Calcium and 56% protein.  The most important benefits of pearl powder are: absorbs oil & skin impurities, helps the skin to feel smooth, and contains a natural moisturizer.

DERMA-CBI™ Complex: A cocktail of soothing and skin conditioning botanicals such as Green Tea Extract, Licorice Root Extract and Olive Leaf Extract. This intense botanical trifecta not only helps to protect the skin barrier but it also encourages a healthy-looking and radiant complexion.

Orchid Flower Extract: Orchids have long been used for protective and moisturizing properties. Orchid extract helps to restore and maintain a bright and radiant complexion and also to achieve a smooth and flawless complexion.

Seabuckthorn Berry Extract: The fruit of the sea buckthorn, a large shrub, is macerated for this extract. This native to the Northern Hemisphere grows in sandy coastal areas and dry river beds. The fruit is an excellent source of vitamin E, flavonoids, carotenoids, folic acid and vitamin C.

Okay so which ones am I loving and using? Well, for the last year I have been using the Loose Mineral FoundationFace Concealer, and Vacation In A Jar™ Bronzer. I can’t rave about all of them enough!!  You can wear them every day without worrying about breaking out or clogging your skin up.  You can do light coverage or heavy, they are very buildable.  You can also mix the foundation with a little water to make it creamier and more liquid-like going on.  They are just incredible!

A few recent additions to my collection have been the Satin Complexion Enhancers™ that adds the most gorgeous natural glow to your skin without making it looking oily or sparkly (I’m obsessed!) and the LumiLitez™ Creme-to-Powder Illuminizer which is the most amazing highlighter EVER that I have it in 2 colors, a silver based and gold based.  I am still exploring all the items in this brand and continue to try more.  Next up on my list is the acne-safe foundation primercreme-to-powder blushmakeup remover, and hydrating skin spritz.

Tell me any and all skin issues!  Have you ever had issues with foundations breaking you out more? Have you tried any PRIIA products? I would LOVE to know your thoughts!

    Hi Kayleigh,

I have acne prone skin and can’t get rid of it. I tried many products and still horrible because of acne. I agree with you that many products are claiming to provide clear skin and fight acne but still no effect. I will try this Priia product, and I am hoping still that it will help my acne prone skin. Thank you for sharing.
