3 Delicious Mocktail Recipes To Kick Off The Weekend

Feb 12

I really really do. Just as much as my detox drink & golden milk, which is saying a lot!  I make one almost every single night.  So…why do I love mocktails so much?

Glad you asked!

  1. As relaxing as a glass of champagne or wine is, I don’t want to have one every night.  I save those for occasions because of the inflammatory effects of alcohol
  2. Instead of making me sleepy or lightheaded like alcohol, I can enjoy my mocktail without the negative side affects
  3.  Lets be real, the calories and sugar in alcohol is cray cray, and it’s not something that’s needed every night.  But I still want to feel like I’m treating myself, so guilt free mocktails it is!
  4.  After being diagnosed with Celiac Disease I have really been avoiding alcohol because my liver, gallbladder, and kidneys were all inflamed due to my digestive system being a wreck.

Now I’m not avoiding alcohol forever, just for now because I’m healing.  I don’t completely deprive myself, I actually had a half a glass of champagne last night at Van de Vort’s Valentine’s Soiree.  Because hey, I wanted a little treat while shopping, checking out JNB’s AMAZING line, and getting a makeover by my girlfriend Alma with Kissed By A.M.L.  It was super fun, and a tiny glass of champagne wont kill me!

But back to the mocktails.  My girlfriends and I have been LOVING these because we can get together, enjoy them guilt free, and try some new flavors to spice it up a bit.  So what is my favorite beyond favorite way to make my mocktails?

Yup, I said shrub.  I love love love shrub!

Sooo What The Hec Is Shrub?

Shrubs are a delicious blend of fruit, sugar, and vinegar.  They originate from the Colonial Era, originally to preserve fruit after a long harvest.  When using shrubs as a mixer, the vinegar provides that perfect bite with a bit of tang that perfectly balances with the sweetness of the fruit.  The perfect mixer!  When making mocktails, that bite of vinegar tastes like there is alcohol in it.  When I made one for my girlfriend she was convinced I put in a splash of alc.

Now I don’t just drink any shrub.  I was super excited to find The Hudson Standard because they use organic ingredients and work with local farms of the Hudson region.  They are all about sustainability and cooperative ventures (<<which I love).  The Hudson Standard is a welcome convergence between the cocktail revolution and the “farm to table” movement.  All of their shrubs and bitters are handcrafted too!

When I wanted to write a recipe post using The Hudson Standard Shrubs I contacted them because I wanted my readers to experience these amazing shrubs too!  So we are hosting a giveaway!!  1 lucky winner with get a full size bottle of The Hudson Standard Peach Lavender Shrub (yumm!!!) Giveaway instructions will be at the end of this post.  Now as promised…

3 Delicious Mocktail Recipes To Kick Off The Weekend!

1 oz shrub (a not quite full shot glass)

6 oz Sparkling Mineral Water  (3/4 cup) & Perrier is my fav!!!

Frozen fruit (for these I have dark cherries, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries)

*Optional lemons for added citrus flavor

In a cute wine or champagne glass add 1oz of your favorite flavor shrub, 6-8 oz of sparkling mineral water (<<I always buy in bulk here), and frozen fruit as your ice cubes

FYI you get about 16 drinks out of each bottle, so they last a while!!

Strawberry Rhubarb Mocktail

(strawberries & rhubarb)

I added frozen strawberries and a squeeze of lemon to spice it up!  This mocktail is so darn refreshing you would swear you were on the beach with a daiquiri in hand.

Apple Coriander Maple Mocktail

(apples, maple syrup, & coriander)

Frozen dark cherries provided such a fantastic compliment to the apple and coriander.  This is perfect for fall/winter with its crisp and refreshing taste.

Winter Switchel Mocktail

(ginger, honey, turmeric, peppercorn, & cayenne)

With the slight spiciness of the cayenne & peppercorn I went with frozen blueberries and raspberries for some sweetness.  An herb like rosemary would go great in this too!  You guys know I die for turmeric & cayenne.  I mean, they are in my two favorite drinks here and here, so of course I’m obsessed with it in a mocktail.
